Just as trying to unravel the mysteries around the other aspects of the Cremona makers, the wood also has its mysteries.  These theories, by so-called “authorities,” abound as to where their wood came from and its age before using.  Of course, there are some who so strongly believe that they have uncovered the mystery, but nobody knows for sure.

As with all makers, I try to obtain the best, aged wood that I can from Europe, Asia, Pacific, Canada, and the U.S.A.  I also obtain wood from makers who retire and from estates.  Some of these “authorities” have defined seasoned wood ready for making between seven and fifteen years old.  I have used wood that is from seven to one hundred plus years old.  At present, I have a large stock of very fine wood ranging between seven and one hundred years old.  Only the best wood will be used, in order to craft a ready-made instrument or one that is commissioned.
