There are lots of materials used to make the fittings.  Every professional knows about the long-used boxwood, ebony and rosewood.  However, today there are many new woods used in making fittings.  Recently I have been fortunate to have made contact with a very famous carver who carves the most beautiful boxwood fittings in the old Vuillaume and Hill styles, made from over thirty year old boxwood, that I own and send to him periodically.  I also use fittings made in Brazil of caviuna, that resembles rosewood and jacaranda (a variety of rosewood) that is similar to pernambuco wood.  All of my instruments are fitted with the best materials available and you can either select at that stage or at the beginning as commissioned.
